NAINITAL/RUDRAPUR: A massive fire broke out in the Tanda and Bhakra forest ranges of the Terai region around 2pm on Wednesday, rapidly spreading and prompting authorities to close the Delhi highway (NH-9) as a precaution
Travellers were redirected to Haldwani and Nainital via Pantnagar via Lalkuan.
The fire impacted a section of NH-9 linking
Haldwani to Rudrapur and continuing towards Delhi via Rampur and Moradabad
Officials said the highway remained closed for nearly three hours from 3pm to 6pm. Vinay Bhargav, chief fire officer (CFO) of Haldwani, said, “Due to the sensitivity and safety of the people, traffic was diverted.”
Dense smoke impeded visibility, making it difficult to extinguish the flames.
Authorities managed to bring the fire under
control within a few hours, when eight hectares of forest land was razed.
“The fire, fuelled by hot winds and intense sunlight, quickly grew in intensity,” said a forest official. Recognising the severity, traffic on the highway was halted.
Police and fire department teams arrived at the location, focusing on extinguishing the flames in the forest bordering the national highway. Fo department personnel continued their efforts to control the fire within the forest late into the night.
