Days after after three civil service aspirants drowned in a flooded basement of Rau’s IAS Study Circle in Central Delhi’s Old Rajinder Nagar, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) deployed two bulldozers in the area to raze illegal encroachments.
The bulldozers on Monday dug up footpaths on both sides of Bada Bazar Road, which had covered up the drains outside the coaching institutes.
Meanwhile, students continued their protest for better facilities and accountability from authorities. Police prevented the protesters from reaching the demolition site.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor (L-G) V K Saxena visited the protest site, but was soon ushered away due to angry protesters. However, several students also expressed their disappointed that the L-G was heckled and made to leave early.
The protests have been spoiled by people from JNU and DU attending it,” said Ayush Singh, 23, a UPSC aspirant who was part of the protest . “We want to have constructive discussions with the government and put our demands forward. How can we do that when these student unions say ‘Haye, Haye’ to the L-G?” he asked.
The MCD on Monday suspended a Junior Engineer and an Assistant Engineer. Earlier on Sunday, the MCD had sealed 13 coaching institutes in the same area that illegally ran classes from basements.
Tanya Soni from Telangana, Shreya Yadav from UP, and Nevin Dalwin from Kerala died on July 27 after they were trapped in the basement of Rau’s IAS Study Circle, which got flooded when a drain burst during heavy rain. The basement was a library used for self-study according to the students.
