In response to India’s demand, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has successfully facilitated the discharge of several Indians serving as support staff in the Russian Army, marking a significant development in a matter of diplomatic urgency.
Addressing media reports on February 26, the MEA clarified, “We remain committed, as a top priority, to actively pursuing with the Russian authorities all relevant cases of Indian nationals for an early discharge from the Russian Army.” The Ministry acknowledged the presence of Indians in the Russian military, denying inaccurate reports suggesting that they were compelled to engage in combat with Russian soldiers along the Ukraine border.
MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized, “Each and every such case brought to the attention of the Indian embassy in Moscow has been strongly taken up with the Russian authorities.” Furthermore, cases highlighted to the Ministry have been diligently addressed through the Russian embassy in New Delhi, resulting in the successful discharge of several Indians.
Last week, Jaiswal urged Indian nationals to exercise caution, emphasizing, “We urge all Indian nationals to stay away from this conflict zone in Ukraine.” The MEA’s prompt diplomatic efforts have demonstrated tangible results, ensuring the safe repatriation of Indian support staff.
Earlier, Asaduddin Owaisi, leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), had appealed to the MEA for the rescue of Indian nationals involved. The successful discharge underscores India’s commitment to safeguarding the well-being of its citizens amidst geopolitical tensions.
