Spanish Travel Vlogger Allegedly Gang-Raped in Jharkhand, Women Safety Concerns Arise Again in India

In a distressing incident in Dumka, Jharkhand, a Spanish travel vlogger was allegedly gang-raped by seven men. The principal district judge, Anil Kumar Mishra, met the victim and reported that she is “emotionally shattered but physically stable.”

The PDJ ensured the woman’s safety during the investigation and assisted in recording her statement under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Jharkhand police promptly compensated her with ₹10 lakh. Mishra conveyed, “(We) assured them that the wrongdoers will be apprehended as soon as possible and prosecuted. The victim was emotionally shattered but in a stable physical condition, with medical examinations in progress.”

Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, while the search continues for the remaining accused. Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad, taking suo moto cognizance, directed regular case reports from the police. The Jharkhand High Court instructed the Dumka SP to submit a status report by Thursday, the next hearing date.

The Spanish couple, victims of the crime, posted the accused’s photo on social media, urging public cooperation. They emphasized that such incidents can occur worldwide and urged against baseless generalizations about India. The couple acknowledged India as a “great country worth visiting” and expressed gratitude for the administration’s assistance.

The grim incident prompts reflection on India’s global ranking in women’s safety which is 148th amongst 170 countries. Despite isolated incidents, it is essential to consider India’s overall position. Recent global reports rank India favorably, dispelling unfounded stereotypes about the country’s safety for women.
