The escalating threat of stray dogs has led to a surge in dog bite incidents across the Udham Singh Nagar district headquarters, Rudrapur with alarming numbers reported at the JL Nehru district hospital. In the past three months alone, 1,244 dog bite cases have been recorded, causing growing concern among residents.
According to the district hospital data, 437 people sought treatment for dog bites in August, 422 in September, and 385 in October. The trend continues this month, with 10-15 new cases reported daily. Areas most affected include Singh Colony, Sanjay Nagar, Awas Vikas, Shiv Nagar, Jagatpura, Transit Camp, Preet Vihar, and Khera colonies. Alongside dogs, stray cats and monkeys have also been attacking residents, with cats responsible for 35 injuries and monkeys for 46 in the same period.
“The number of dog bites we are seeing is unprecedented,” said KK Agarwal, Principal Medical Superintendent (PMS) at the District Hospital. “Daily, 10-15 victims come here seeking treatment, and we’ve ensured anti-rabies vaccines are readily available.”
The Rudrapur Municipal Corporation (RMC) has initiated efforts to control the stray dog population by sterilizing over 1,200 dogs in the past three months. “We are actively working to manage stray dogs and prevent bites,” said Naresh Chandra Durgapal, Chief Municipal Commissioner. “Residents can report stray dog issues on the helpline numbers issued.”
One resident, Ravi Kumar of Awas Vikas, who was bitten last month, recounted his ordeal: “I was walking home when a stray dog suddenly attacked me. These dogs roam in packs, and it’s terrifying for us all.”
