In a significant step towards addressing persistent traffic jams, the Mussoorie Municipal Council has finalized arrangements to launch a shuttle service in the town. Following a tender process, the Kingkraige Taxi Association has been awarded the contract to operate the service, which will run between key locations, including Hathipaon, Kingkraige Parking, Library Chowk, and Mall Road.
The initiative stems from the directives of Dehradun’s District Magistrate Savin Basnal, who emphasized the need for immediate measures to decongest Mussoorie’s streets. “The daily traffic jams have been a pressing issue. This shuttle service is a sustainable solution to improve mobility and ease commuter stress,” said Basnal. He also instructed local authorities to expedite the process, leading to swift action by Deputy District Magistrate Mussoorie and the Municipal Council.
The service will categorize vehicles into two classes: Category A, including SUVs such as Innova, Scorpio, and XUV models, and Category B, comprising sedans like Swift Dzire, Maruti Ciaz, and Honda City. The designated routes include Kingregg Parking to Library Chowk, Kingregg Parking to Picture Palace, Hathipaon to Library Chowk, and Hathipaon Band to Picture Palace Mall Road.
Local residents have welcomed the initiative. Ramesh Rawat, a shopkeeper near Mall Road, said, “The traffic jams were affecting our business and frustrating tourists. This shuttle service is much needed.” Similarly, Anjali Mehra, a resident of Hathipaon, remarked, “Traveling in Mussoorie will now be much easier and safer, especially during peak tourist seasons.”
The service is expected to provide much-needed relief to locals and visitors, ensuring smoother traffic flow in one of Uttarakhand’s most popular tourist destinations.
