In a remarkable step towards sustainable urban development, the Rudrapur Municipal Corporation (RMC) has transformed Vivekanand Park in Awas Vikas Colony into a Waste Wonder Park, drawing inspiration from Delhi’s successful model. This initiative utilizes discarded materials like damaged tyres, plastic, and glass bottles to create captivating park installations.

Benches, flower pots, a striking war tank model, and a selfie point made from plastic bottles now adorn the park, showcasing innovative recycling. An expert from Bareilly was invited to craft these stunning artworks from waste, blending creativity with environmental responsibility.

Commissioner of the RMC, Naresh Durgapal said, “Benches, pots, and other artifacts have been made in Vivekanand Park using glass, plastic bottles, tyres, and other waste material collected with garbage. Apart from Patel Park, four other parks are also being identified for development in this manner. This increases the beauty of the park, as well as waste material is also used. These experiments have been done in the Municipal Corporations of Delhi and Chandigarh.”

Rudrapur generates approximately 120 tonnes of garbage daily, comprising both wet and dry waste. Recognizing the potential of recyclable waste, the corporation plans to develop five more Waste Wonder Parks across the city, including Patel Park.

Local residents have welcomed the initiative. Anjali Sharma, a mother of two, said, “My children love visiting the park now. They are fascinated by the creative use of waste, and it teaches them the importance of recycling.”

Similarly, Manish Arya, another parent, said, “The park is not only beautiful but also educational. It feels great to see waste being turned into something so meaningful.”
