Rudrapur: For the first time in Uttarakhand, a sitting MLA will compete in the National Games, as Jamui legislator and ace shooter Shreyasi Singh gears up for the trap shooting event in Udham Singh Nagar district headquarters, Rudrapur. The Commonwealth Games gold medallist and Olympian arrived in the state with a singular focus, securing gold for Bihar.

“My goal is to win gold for Bihar in the National Games,” Shreyasi said, expressing her determination ahead of the competition scheduled for February 8 and 9.

A scion of Bihar’s royal family, the 32-year-old Shreyasi has an illustrious background in both sports and politics. Her father, the late Digvijay Singh, was a Union Minister, while her mother, Putul Kumari, served as an MP. With both her father and grandfather having held the position of President at the National Rifle Association, Shreyasi’s passion for shooting was nurtured from a young age.

Shreyasi, who has been shooting for 17 years, revealed that her turning point came in 2004 when Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore clinched a silver medal in the Athens Olympics. “Watching him win inspired me to dedicate myself completely to shooting and aim for international glory,” she said.

Balancing her dual responsibilities as a sportsperson and a politician is no easy task, but Shreyasi credits time management for maintaining harmony between the two. “My schedule is hectic, and I often go months without a break, but I am proud to serve my country through both sports and politics,” she stated. Encouraging young athletes, she added, “Strong willpower paves the way for success. Keep working hard, and results will follow.”

Having visited Uttarakhand several times as a member of the BJP’s youth wing, she praised the state’s vibrant culture and scenic beauty, saying, “Uttarakhand’s environment and heritage always attract me.”

Notably, Shreyasi won a gold medal in the Shooting at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia – Women’s double trap and a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
