Rudrapur: Efforts are underway to enhance elephant corridors in the forests of Surai, Kilpura, and Khatima forest ranges in the Udham Singh Nagar district. Forest officials have announced plans to install signboards along the elephant corridor passing through these forests to aid both wildlife and forest personnel in understanding the elephant routes.

In recent developments, sightings of elephants have been reported in the Surai Range, indicating ongoing movement within the Elephant Corridor. However, instances of elephants straying into populated areas due to road blockages have led to crop damage and other conflicts.

Sub-divisional Officer (SO) of Khatima forest range Sanchita Verma highlighted the significance of these efforts, saying, “The Forest Department is committed to improving the elephant corridors to facilitate safe movement within the forests. Collaborative efforts with organizations like the Wildlife Trust of India aim to enhance elephant corridors across Uttarakhand.”

“The initiative aligns with the strict adherence to the Wildlife Protection Act, ensuring the protection of not only elephants but also other wildlife such as tigers, leopards, and bears prevalent in the Surai and Khatima ranges”, she added.
