The police in Udham Singh Nagar district are set to launch a district-wide campaign against two-wheelers and four-wheelers fitted with retro and modified silencers, which have become a major cause of noise pollution and road accidents.

Despite periodic crackdowns, the menace persists, with several youngsters installing such silencers, disturbing pedestrians and commuters. Following repeated complaints, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manikant Mishra has instructed police stations across Jaspur, Kashipur, Rudrapur, Kichha, Sitarganj, Khatima, and other areas to intensify enforcement.

“The noise from these vehicles is causing serious inconvenience to the public and even leading to accidents. We will seize such vehicles and trace the source of these modifications,” SSP Mishra said. Notably, in 2024, over 2000 such silencers were removed from bikes in the district and the riders were penalised.

Public outrage has also been mounting. On Monday, members of the Rashtriya Yogi Sena in Khatima submitted a memorandum to SDM Ravindra Singh Bisht, demanding action against these vehicles. “Bikes without silencers are creating a nuisance, disturbing traders, elderly people, women, and children. Some riders even engage in eve-teasing,” said Hayat Singh Bisht, the organization’s national general secretary.

To tackle the issue at its root, the police will first hold meetings with shopkeepers installing these silencers, urging them to stop. “If they continue, strict legal action will be taken,” officials warned.
