Opposition Leader Yashpal Arya launched a scathing attack on the Uttarakhand BJP government for its recent decision to raise electricity prices, alleging that it would further burden the populace already grappling with inflation.
Arya criticized the timing of the hike, questioning why it was implemented without prior announcement before April 1. He emphasized the impact on the state’s 22 lakh consumers, citing a direct 7 percent increase in electricity prices and a rise in fixed charges.
“The BJP government’s move to hike electricity prices is a blatant attempt to empty the pockets of common people,” Arya stated, expressing concern over the strain it would impose on household budgets. He underscored the irony of Uttarakhand providing cheaper electricity to other states while burdening its own citizens with higher rates.
Moreover, Arya highlighted the adverse effects on the state’s economy, warning that increased electricity prices would deter investors and exacerbate the downward trend in productivity caused by declining income and demand.
“This decision is completely anti-people,” Arya asserted, urging the government to prioritize quality electricity provision and reconsider the fee hike. He criticized the lack of adequate electricity supply and maintenance, questioning the rationale behind proposing fee increases under such circumstances.
The opposition leader’s remarks reflect growing discontent among residents and businesses alike, who fear the repercussions of soaring electricity bills on their livelihoods and the state’s economic prospects.
In response to Arya’s criticisms, the BJP government defended its decision, citing the need to address financial constraints and ensure sustainable energy provision.
