The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in several parts of India on Tuesday, September 1. Odisha, Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand are among the key areas likely to receive intense rainfall, while several states across northern, eastern, northeastern and southern India may also see rain, thunderstorms and lightning.
Punjab, meanwhile, has ended August with a significant rainfall deficit. The state received 39% less rain than normal in August, although rainfall activity is expected to increase in parts of Punjab from September 2.
The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over parts of Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Uttarakhand on September 1.
Odisha and Chhattisgarh could experience isolated extremely heavy rainfall, while thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are also expected in several parts of Odisha.
Heavy rain is also forecast in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Sikkim and West Madhya Pradesh.
Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand weather
Uttar Pradesh is likely to receive rain on September 1, with heavy rainfall possible in parts of the state.
Bihar and Jharkhand are also expected to receive rain, with heavy spells possible in some areas. The IMD has included both states among the regions where rainfall activity is expected to remain active.
Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and J&K
Uttarakhand is among the key states facing a very heavy rainfall forecast on September 1. The IMD has also forecast rainfall over Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
Rainfall activity is also expected over Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad.
East and Northeast India weather
Rainfall activity is expected to remain strong across eastern and northeastern India.
Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya may receive very heavy rain at isolated places. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are also likely to receive heavy rain, while thunderstorms and lightning could occur across several parts of the region.
West Bengal and Sikkim are also expected to receive heavy showers.
Punjab rainfall deficit and September outlook
Punjab recorded significantly less rainfall than normal during August. The state received 88.7 mm of rain against the normal 146.2 mm, resulting in a 39% rainfall deficit for the month.
The rainfall deficit was also substantial during the June-August period. From June 1 to August 31, Punjab received 230.5 mm of rain, compared with the normal 362.1 mm, leaving a deficit of around 36%.
There is no weather warning for Punjab on September 1 in the supplied Punjab forecast. Some districts bordering Himachal Pradesh may receive light rain.
Rainfall activity is expected to increase from September 2. A yellow alert for heavy rain has been issued for Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar and Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar on September 2.
Punjab remained relatively warm at the end of August. On August 31, the state’s average maximum temperature was 0.6°C lower than the previous day, but it remained 1.8°C above normal.
Faridkot recorded the highest maximum temperature at 38.8°C. Patiala recorded 35.7°C, Amritsar 35.5°C, Chandigarh and Ludhiana 35°C, Mohali 34.1°C and Jalandhar 32.6°C.
