People across the nation are waiting in anticipation for the implementation of the GNSS-based Electronic Toll Collection system. GNSS is the Global Navigation Satellite System which will help in streamlining the toll collection process across India’s vast network of roads and highways. By leveraging satellite navigation data, vehicles equipped with GNSS-enabled tags can seamlessly pass through toll booths without stopping. This will not only enhance efficiency but also reduce congestion and minimise travel time for millions of commuters. As India strides towards a digitally empowered future, the integration of GNSS-based ETC marks a significant step forward in revolutionizing the nation’s transportation ecosystem. But how is this system different from the FASTag system? Let’s dive right into it.

Digital Highways: GNSS-based tolling vs FASTag system

The GNSS technology or satellite tolling is going to have virtual toll booths installed on roads and highways. These booths are going to monitor the distance travelled by vehicles and track their location, but they will only do so with vehicles that are GNSS-enabled. These virtual booths will also record the type, registration no., and bank account details of the vehicles. FASTags on the other hand require physical toll booths to track and charge vehicles that are FASTag-enabled.

The good news is that the GNSS system will work simultaneously with the FASTag system. So while you may not be required to remove your FASTags immediately, you can do so gradually in the future. This allows commuters to make a smooth transition to upgrade from FASTags to the GNSS system. While the FASTag system is faster than the regular toll charging system, people still end up in queues during peak traffic hours. GNSS will totally eliminate this hassle and make commute barrier-free.

The NHAI last week invited Global Expression of Interest (EOI) from companies to develop and implement Global Navigation Satellite System based Electronic Toll Collection system in India. Dedicated GNSS lanes will be accessible at the toll plazas, enabling vehicles equipped with GNSS-based ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) to pass without interruption. With the increasing adoption of GNSS-based ETC, all lanes will gradually transition to GNSS-enabled lanes.
