In a significant development in the investigation of the Dera Kar Sewa Chief Baba Tarsem Singh murder case, the Nanakmatta police in district Udham Singh Nagar have arrested four suspects, shedding light on the intricate planning behind the heinous crime. However, the prime suspects, Sarabjit Singh Mianwind and Amarjeet Singh remain elusive despite intensified police efforts. The arrested persons, all from Uttar Pradesh, have been identified as Dilbagh Singh from Kabir Pur village in Nigohi of district Shahjahanpur, Amandeep Singh alias Kala from Bara Jagat village in district Pilibhit, Harminder alias Pindi from Randhirpur Tilhar village in district Shahjahanpur, and Balkar Singh from Badhe Kanja village in district Pilibhit. A reward of Rs 50,000 has been announced by the DIG of the Kumaun range for the apprehension of the fugitives, Sarabjit and Amarjeet.
Providing details of the investigation, the district’s Senior Superintendent of Police, Manjunath TC, said, “After a thorough investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), it was revealed that Sarabjit Singh and Amarjeet Singh were lodging at the Gurudwara Nanakmatta Sahib. They had been occupying room number 23 since March 19 at the inn in the Gurdwara premises.”
“Before their stay, Sarabjit Singh had registered his ID, Aadhar card number, and mobile number in the inn’s register,” added Manjunath TC. “According to the call records, Sarabjit Singh traveled extensively across Rampur, Bajpur, Kichha, Bareilly, and Shahjahanpur from March 19 to March 27.”
Further investigation revealed that the mobile phones used in the crime were purchased from Tilhar town, Shahjahanpur, on March 14th. Analysis of the suspects’ old phone records indicated their association with a few men from Kabirpur village, Shahjahanpur district, since February 2024.
“The murder of Baba Tarsem Singh was orchestrated by these individuals, aiming to seize control of Dera Kar Sewa located at Gurudwara Nanakmatta Sahib and other prominent Deras in the Terai region,” said SSP Manjunath. “The suspects hired professional criminals, Sabarjeet Singh and Amarjeet Singh alias Bittu, for the task, paying them Rs 10 lakh.
According to police reports, the transaction between the hirers and the killers was meticulously executed, with Rs 1,60,000 being given as an advance. Every facility was provided to the hired criminals to carry out the assassination. The killers planned the crime, monitoring Baba Tarsem Singh’s movements and enlisting the help of Nanakmatta Gurdwara Sahib employee Amandeep Singh alias Kala. On March 28, they executed the plan, fatally shooting Baba Tarsem Singh while he was sitting on a chair inside the Nanakmatta Sahib premises.
Following the incident, the culprits directly contacted the conspirator, Dilbagh Singh, where the killers received an additional sum of Rs five lakh rupees.
“We are committed to leaving no stone unturned in our pursuit of justice for Baba Tarsem Singh. The persons arrested today will be questioned thoroughly,” said SSP Manjunath TC. “After discussion with DIG Kumaon Yogendra Singh Rawat, the reward has been raised from 25 thousand to 50 thousand for information leading to the apprehension of Sarvjeet Singh and Amarjeet Singh, the main accused. More than a dozen teams are working across five states to nab them. A dedicated SIT team comprising 87 members is working day and night to nab the shooters”, SSP Manjunath added.
