The process of relocating 40 mature trees affected by road and intersection widening projects in Haldwani of district Nainital, has begun under the supervision of City Magistrate AP Vajpayee. This initiative aims to balance infrastructure development with environmental conservation.

On Monday, the translocation of 20 trees started along Kathgharia Kaladhungi Road, marking the first phase of this campaign. The work will continue overnight in other areas, including Mangal Parao and Sindhi Chowk. The remaining 20 trees will undergo similar preparation and relocation.

The district administration, overseeing 13 intersection and road widening projects, decided to relocate significant tree species such as Peepal, Pakkad, and Banyan instead of cutting them down. Last month, a preparatory phase began with pruning, sealing, and anti-fungal treatment. The trees’ roots were carefully dug out and enriched with nutrient-rich soil to encourage new growth, ensuring their readiness for translocation.

Speaking on the initiative, City Magistrate Vajpayee said, “This campaign for environmental protection. We have ensured every measure to preserve these trees and minimize disruptions during the process.” Electricity supply will remain disrupted in areas where translocation work is being carried out. This move follows a successful translocation of a Pakkad tree last year in Kathgodam, which has since thrived.

Environmental activist Amit Kumar Saini said, “Trees like Peepal and Banyan are vital for biodiversity, air quality, and urban cooling. Translocating them shows the administration’s sensitivity to ecological balance while advancing urban development.”
