A significant meeting was organized by Nagar Nigam Rudrapur to promote animal welfare in Uttarakhand. The discussion focused on guidelines and measures for managing stray dog feeding points and ensuring the protection of cows.
Chief Veterinary Officer Ashutosh Joshi elaborated on animal welfare laws and regulations, emphasizing the necessity of adopting a humane approach in society. He highlighted the strict legal provisions in place to prevent cruelty toward animals.
Durgapal (MNA), in his address, stressed that animals are an integral part of society and deserve to live with dignity and respect. He urged the community to develop compassion and understanding toward animals.
Promoting Compassion and Kindness
Pratham Bisht, SPCA member, emphasized the need to educate children about compassion and kindness toward animals. He also stated that harassing individuals who feed stray animals is a punishable offense under the law. He appealed to society for tolerance and cooperation in such matters.
He suggested identifying designated dog feeding points to prevent conflicts between animal lovers and the general public.
Focus on Cow Protection
The meeting also discussed the importance of cow protection. It was highlighted that abandoning cows in urban areas violates the Cow Protection Act. Dairy owners were urged to register and account for the number of cows in their care.
Adherence to the Five Freedoms of Animals
The meeting emphasized ensuring the Five Freedoms of Animals:
1. Freedom from hunger and thirst,
2. Freedom from discomfort,
3. Freedom from pain, injury, and disease,
4. Freedom from fear and distress,
5. Freedom to express natural behavior.
Respecting these freedoms ensures animal well-being, reduces incidents of dog bites, and fosters peaceful coexistence between humans and animals.
