The Udham Singh Nagar district police arrested a man involved in a recent armed attack on a forest department patrol team in the Gadarpur area. The accused has been identified as Gurmeet Singh alias Geji, a resident of Bazpur in the district. The police recovered a 12-bore rifle and four live cartridges from his possession.
The incident took place on the evening of September 6 when a group of armed criminals opened fire on a forest department patrol team in Pipal Parao forest, seriously injuring Forest Ranger Roop Narayan Gautam and three other personnel. Following a complaint by Ranger Gautam, a case was registered at Gadarpur Police Station under sections 109(1)/121(2)/132/191(3) of the BNS Act and Section 26 of the Forest Protection Act.
To apprehend the culprits, four police teams were formed. Led by Gadarpur Police Station Head and the SOG Kashipur unit, on Sunday night, the teams intercepted and arrested Gurmeet Singh near the Abdullah Nagar border, along the road from Calcutta village.
Upon interrogation, Gurmeet Singh confessed to the attack and said, “On September 6, along with my associates—Sangat Singh alias Sangi, Sandeep Singh, Sarvjeet Singh alias Chhabbi, and 5-6 others—we fired on the forest department team in Pipal Parao Range.”
District’s Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manikant Mishra said, “The accused will be presented before the court after the necessary legal formalities. Gurmeet Singh is a professional wood smuggler and vehicle thief, with several pending cases, including those under the Gangster Act. The remaining accused at large will also be arrested soon”.
