In a remark indicative of the close relationship between the two nations, Russian President Vladimir Putin said ties between Moscow and New Delhi were “specially privileged” and “developing dynamically” during a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The meeting witnessed a light moment when the Russian President said he thought PM Modi would understand his remarks without translation as both nations shared a “tight” relationship.
Our relations are so tight that I thought you would understand me without translation,” Putin said during the meeting. The remark drew a chuckle from PM Modi, whom Putin has called his “good friend” on several occasions.
Responding to Putin, PM Modi said, “Me visiting Russia in the last three months reflects our close coordination and deep friendship. The annual summit held in Moscow in July has strengthened our cooperation across all areas.”
India sees Russia as a time-tested friend that has played a significant role in its economic development and security. The bilateral meeting comes three months after PM Modi held an informal meeting with Putin in July in Moscow, raising eyebrows in the United States and Ukraine, which has been engaged in a war with Russia.
“I remember our July meeting when we had a good discussion on a range of issues, and we also spoke over the phone several times. I am very thankful to you for accepting my invitation to visit Kazan,” Putin further said.
PM Modi, on his part, said the Russia-Ukraine conflict should be resolved peacefully and India was ready to provide all possible cooperation.
