A video of a woman deliberately destroying a Pookalam created by children in a residential complex in Bengaluru has enraged social media
users.

The woman, identified as Simi Nair, vandalised the Pookalam after residents of her housing society refused her argument that it should be placed in individual apartments instead of a public space. The residents explained that the lobby is a shared area, giving them the right to set up the Pookalam there. However, Simi
stepped on and destroyed the floral arrangement with her feet

The video of the entire incident went viral on social media. Following this, Sampigehalli Police registered a case against Simi, who originally hails from Pathanamthitta district in Kerala

The families claimed that Simi had expressed disagreement with residents setting up Pookalams after Thiruvonam day. The floral arrangement was created by families-including children. After the families returned to their flats, Simi reportedly vandalised the Pookalam. Despite intervention from the building’s security, she refused to back down and proceeded to destroy the floral arrangements. It is learnt that a complaint was later filed with the police, leading to a case being registered against her.
Meanwhile, some social media users agreed with Simi’s argument but disagreed with her action. A user in X wrote, “Both sides need to be heard before passing comments. Maybe the second party making the video has incited her or deliberately created this in the area used by the lady in the picture. We must respect each other’s culture, but not by making others
uncomfortable.”

However, many users, including the Malayali community in Bengaluru, opined that she should apologise for her actions. “Instead of fighting for languages, we should unite ourselves, or else in the next 10 years we won’t be able to celebrate all these festivals. Stop dividing in terms of caste, state, or creed.”
