Residents of Rudrapur, Kashipur, Sitarganj, and Khatima in district Udham Singh Nagar will soon get relief from recurrent flooding as the Irrigation Department plans to construct a modern drainage system in these cities. A private company has been commissioned to conduct a detailed survey, with an action plan expected by March.

For years, inadequate drainage facilities in these cities have led to flood-like situations during monsoons. In 2021, heavy rainfall submerged large parts of Rudrapur and other cities under four to five feet of water, causing severe damage to shops and properties. Many residents were forced to seek refuge on rooftops, while the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local police carried out rescue operations. Khatima also experienced severe waterlogging, with floodwaters reaching the highway. Similarly, Kashipur and Sitarganj residents faced hardships due to the lack of proper drainage infrastructure.

To address this persistent issue, the Irrigation Department has initiated a large-scale survey covering 55.22 sq km in Rudrapur, 39.62 sq km in Kashipur, 4 sq km in Sitarganj, and 16 sq km in Khatima, totaling 114.84 sq km. The survey, costing approximately Rs 76.32 lakh, is expected to be completed by March.

“We are conducting a detailed survey to ensure an efficient drainage system. Once completed, we will prepare an action plan and submit a proposal to the government for funding,” said Bharat Singh Dangi, Executive engineer of the Irrigation Department.

Officials believe the new drainage system will significantly mitigate flood risks and provide long-term relief to urban residents. Once the project receives financial approval, construction is expected to commence promptly, marking a crucial step towards improving urban infrastructure in the district.
