The Udham Singh Nagar district is witnessing a concerning rise in dementia cases among the elderly, with loneliness, inadequate care, and stress being identified as primary contributing factors. The JLN District Hospital in Udham Singh Nagar reports that approximately 15 to 20 new dementia patients seek treatment each month. According to hospital experts, dementia is a neurological disorder that impairs memory, cognitive abilities, and behavior.

Currently, around 4 million people in India are affected by dementia, with a rapid increase in cases among individuals aged 60 and above. The modern lifestyle, characterized by a lack of physical activity and an irregular diet, exacerbates the risk of developing dementia. To mitigate these risks, experts recommend engaging in mental exercises to keep the mind active, such as telling and recalling stories, solving puzzles, learning new languages, and performing simple math tasks.

Dr. Ish Dhalla, a psychiatrist at JLN District Hospital, emphasized the importance of regular mental activities and social interactions for maintaining mental health. He stated, “Patients with dementia benefit greatly from activities that stimulate the mind, such as word search puzzles, number puzzles, and community engagement. It is crucial for families to provide continuous care and support to the elderly.”

Additionally, Dr. Dhalla highlighted the negative impact of substance abuse on dementia risk. “The rising trend of smoking and alcohol consumption poses significant risks for developing dementia later in life. Reducing these habits, alongside regular exercise and a balanced diet, can significantly lower these risks,” he added.

The hospital is actively educating patients and their families about the importance of regular health check-ups and timely treatment to manage and potentially reduce the progression of dementia. The community is urged to ensure that elderly family members receive proper care and attention to enhance their quality of life.
