Nainital: A 50-year-old woman was killed by a tiger in the Dhikuli area of Corbett Tiger Reserve (CTR) in Nainital district on Tuesday morning. The incident was reported from the Sarpduli range of CTR.

Kaushalya Devi, a resident of Dhikuli village, had ventured into the forest near her home with six other women to gather wood and grass. According to witnesses, the group was collecting supplies when a tiger suddenly attacked Devi, dragging her into the forest despite efforts from the other women to intervene. Hearing her cries, they attempted to save her, shouting and making noise to deter the tiger, but it was too late.

In a distressed state, the women returned to the village and immediately informed local residents and family members, who promptly alerted forest authorities. A search operation was launched, with forest officers, staff, and villagers combing the area. The search team, reportedly firing into the air to ward off the predator, located Devi’s body in a severely injured state after an hour of effort.

Rahul Mishra, Deputy Director of Corbett Tiger Reserve, said that wildlife attacks often increase during the winter months. “I urge villagers to avoid venturing into the forest unnecessarily. This period sees heightened tiger aggression,” he said.

Mishra added, “We are installing camera traps and have intensified patrolling in the area. Higher officials have also been informed, and continuous efforts will be made to track the tiger’s movement.”
