An innovative medical device aimed at helping patients with restricted mouth opening has been granted a patent in India. The device, named TrisCaRe, was officially awarded patent number 556611 on December 19, 2024, following its filing in 2021.

The TrisCaRe Mouth Opening Device comes in four variants – Broad, Sleek, Full Mouth, and Half Mouth – designed to cater to patients with different levels of oral restriction.

A Breakthrough for OSMF and Trismus Patients

TrisCaRe is specifically designed for patients suffering from trismus, oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF), head and neck cancers, or complications following surgery and radiotherapy.

OSMF – a precancerous condition caused mainly by tobacco, paan masala, and supari (areca nut/betel nut) chewing – is highly prevalent in the Indian subcontinent. It gradually leads to stiffness in the oral mucosa and restricted mouth opening, severely affecting speech, eating, and dental care. Patients often require lifelong management.

For such individuals, TrisCaRe is being hailed as a boon, offering a practical and affordable tool for improving jaw mobility and enhancing quality of life.

The Vision Behind TrisCaRe

The device was conceptualized and developed by Prof. Dr. Pawan Gupta, Senior Director of Surgical Oncology at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali and Founder of ICanCare.

“Restricted mouth opening significantly hampers recovery and quality of life for oral cancer and OSMF patients. The need for a simple, safe, and cost-effective device led to the development of TrisCaRe,” Dr. Gupta said.

Key Features & Benefits

Ergonomic design for safe and comfortable use.

Effective for trismus caused by OSMF, trauma, surgery, or radiation therapy.

Built-in measurement scale for tracking patient progress.

Made of high-quality polyoxymethylene (POM) for durability and strength.

Affordable to ensure accessibility across socio-economic groups.

Impact on Oral Cancer & OSMF Rehabilitation

Experts believe TrisCaRe could revolutionize oral cancer and OSMF rehabilitation by enabling early recovery, improving jaw mobility, and facilitating timely surgical and dental interventions. The device is particularly useful for patients with less than 3 cm mouth opening, a condition that complicates cancer treatment and oral procedures.

Clinical Research & Evidence

The effectiveness of TrisCaRe is currently being studied in multi-centric clinical trials across leading Indian hospitals. Early results indicate notable improvements in mouth opening, comfort, and quality of life for patients.

A Historic Milestone

Medical professionals view this patent as a historic milestone in trismus and OSMF management. By combining innovation with affordability, TrisCaRe is expected to set new benchmarks in oral rehabilitation and cancer care.

Dr. Gupta expressed his satisfaction:

“This patent is not just an acknowledgment of innovation but also a step forward in improving oral healthcare. TrisCaRe will make a real difference in the lives of thousands of patients, especially those suffering due to tobacco and supari chewing.”
