The Agriculture Department of district Udham Singh Nagar is set to promote organic farming on a large scale, encompassing 4,500 hectares across the district. Under the plan, 225 clusters will be established in seven development blocks, each spanning 20 hectares. Farmers owning land within these clusters will be included as members, and the initiative will run for three years with organic investments provided by the department.

This marks the district’s largest-ever organic farming effort. Previously, in 2018, 11 clusters were developed for organic farming under a similar scheme. Currently, five clusters of 20 hectares each are operational under the Aspirational District Scheme in Bazpur, Khatima, Jaspur, and Sitarganj.

The initiative aligns with the Traditional Agriculture Development Scheme (PKVY) launched by the Central Government in 2015 to promote organic farming and improve soil health. Known as the “rice bowl” of Uttarakhand’s Terai region, Udham Singh Nagar has historically cultivated paddy and wheat on a large scale. This new action plan aims to pivot towards chemical-free, sustainable agriculture.

Chief Agriculture Officer Abhay Saxena said, “We are forming 225 clusters across seven blocks from Jaspur to Khatima to implement organic farming practices. Farmers will use eco-friendly and low-cost methods, producing Basmati rice, wheat, fruits, and vegetables without chemicals or pesticides.”

Farmers interested in joining the initiative can apply at Nyaya Panchayats, Block Development Offices, or the Agriculture Department. Upon selection, they will undergo organic farming training. Saxena added, “This program will not only boost soil health but also provide farmers with better crop prices and healthier produce.”

Farmer Balbeer Singh Virk from Bazpur said, “This is a revolutionary step for small farmers like me. Organic farming will improve soil fertility and yield better-quality crops. The department’s support makes it easier for us to adopt these practices,” he said.

Another official of the agriculture department said, “The program promises numerous benefits, including enhanced soil management, adoption of advanced techniques, and production of chemical-free grains, catering to both health-conscious consumers and environmentally friendly markets”.
