A workshop on fodder production and silage making for master trainers, along with a stand-alone training program on nursery management, formally commenced at the College of Agriculture auditorium, Pantnagar Agricultural University. These two training programs are being organized during 29 November to 4 December 2025 & 2 to 6 December 2025, respectively. The programs are being conducted with the support of REAP-IFAD, Uttarakhand Gramya Vikas Samiti (UGVS), Rural Development Department, Government of Uttarakhand.
The workshop was inaugurated by the chief guest, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Manmohan Singh Chauhan, along with Director Research Dr. S.K. Verma, Acting Dean College of Agriculture Dr. Rohitashav Singh, Climate Associate REAP-UGVS Mr. Vipan Madwal, Nodal Officer REAP-UGVS Dr. A.S. Nain, Co-PI and Joint Director, Research Dr. K.P. Singh & Dr. Anil Kumar.
In his address, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Chauhan emphasized the importance of the ‘Lab to Land’ approach so that scientific methods can be effectively delivered to farmers. He appreciated the efforts of REAP-IFAD and UGVS in fodder production, nursery management, enterprise development, and promoting start-ups. He said that real understanding comes only when one interacts directly with farmers and understands their problems closely. He noted that livestock productivity depends 20% on animal care, 60% on nutrition, and 15–20% on animal health. He stressed the need for balanced fiber and mineral content in fodder. Expressing concern over migration from hilly areas, he said improved fodder production and livestock-based income can help reduce this trend. He encouraged participants to understand microbial activity, fermentation science, and organic silage production. He also motivated trainees to adopt innovative tools and techniques that save farmers’ time, labour and cost.
Director Research Dr. S.K. Verma praised the initiative and highlighted the need to address fodder scarcity through scientific approaches. Acting Dean Dr. Rohitashav Singh encouraged participants to make full use of the practical sessions. Co-PI and Joint Director, Research Dr. Anil Kumar emphasized the critical role of quality fodder in improving milk production and animal health. Mr. Vipan Madwal from REAP-IFAD shared ongoing field initiatives and success stories.
At the beginning of the program, Dr. A.S. Nain outlined the objectives of the workshop and urged participants to implement the techniques in their respective regions. University experts will conduct sessions on innovative fodder management, climate-resilient farming practices, storage techniques, and advanced silage-making methods. The program aims to equip trainers with advanced knowledge, enabling them to better support farmer communities in Uttarakhand and contribute to sustainable livestock development and improved rural livelihoods.
At the end of the program, Dr. P.K. Singh delivered a vote of thanks. The event was attended by trainees from 13 districts, along with deans, directors, and faculty members of the university.
